Desirea's Reflection on the Group 4 Project
For the Group 4 Project, our topic was Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs. In the project, my part was the Religious and Moral Controversies on Genetic Engineering and GMOs. This project was for the IB( International Baccalaureate) The topic was actually pretty interesting because I like theology and it also wasn't as bad or as hard as I had originally thought it to be.
While working on this project there were struggles in the group project as well as individually. I learned that especially in a group project it is vital that the group be able to function well. There were disagreements at times, but luckily, those disagreements resolved fairly quickly. Struggles that I faced included finding content that included BOTH sides of the issue and gave strong arguments to support why GMOs are wrong or right and why genetic engineering is acceptable or unacceptable. Basically, the benefits and setbacks. I found content on why they are wrong but very little supporting the issue. As a group, a struggle was disagreement. Personally, I hate arguments because they hinder the group by stopping progress that a group could be making because they take away time that could be used to work on the project. The arguments resolved, but while they were going on I could feel the tension in the room. Also, I'm the type of person who gets super distracted and I tend to wander off into another part of my house the middle of doing something. That was a struggle because I kept losing focus, but luckily it was easy for me to get back on task even though I hated every second of research. The research started out fun because I like seeing what other people think and believe, but even though it got really boring at times, I always saw something that I missed the last time I researched. Kind of like when you watch your favorite movie 50,000 times and then when you start to watch it a month or so later, you think that you know everything about it and then you see something you missed the last time that explains everything and then think “ oohhh I get it now!” In my presentation, I might have been biased because I'm a Christian and against GMOs and genetically modified organisms-it's very hard for me to argue for them.
There were multiple successes that I had, and I was very happy when I had them. For example, when I FINALLY found something that presented the positive effects of GMOs and genetic engineering (which, by the way, took FOREVER). Another success was overcoming the obstacles that I previously stated...while getting at least 9 hours of sleep, although that's normal for me. I also learned a ton about the topic. To motivate myself to get back on task when I got off task, I used sleep( the earlier I finished, the earlier I could go to sleep and the average time I fell asleep was about 9-9:30).
Afterall, whatever you do you should give your all to it and that was what I tried to do. My advice to future IB students who do this project is to find something to motivate yourself so you stay on task and to give 100 percent. A strategy that worked for me was to work while listening to classical music because it helped me to work faster and produce a better quality of work, and it also helped knowing that the project was in a group.
