The Religious Controversies of Genetic Engineering
Ethics: A study group of vegetarians show that a gene transfer from an animal to a plant would “violate an animals essence and integrity. Some religions such as Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam have food restrictions such as beef or pork because that animal is unclean. Many Christian denominations don't have food restrictions.
Muslim Perspective
Muslim Perspective: Quaran suggests that modifying living things is a sin. However, it's only allowed if it is necessary like feeding the hungry. There is a controversy that GMOs do not prevent harm, they cause it. They also do not know if genetically engineered plants are safe or not. The death of lacewing insects and bees went up when fed GM foods. Genetic modification would also violate certain Muslim principles.
Christianity Perspective:
However, GMOs will not solve poverty and hunger because of the complexity of it all. Certain documents of Christianity, it stresses human rights and environmental respect. Christian theologians either reject GMOs or support their use. Mainly, Christians are conflicted on GMO use. Will humans be safe?animals? Environment? The Bible says in more than one place (Deuteronomy, Leviticus) that interbreeding animals and crossbreeding plants is wrong. Basically, it says that using DNA techniques to identify genes in conventional breeding techniques is okay, but using them to alter genes is not okay. Since We are mortal for a reason.
In Genesis, God says to “fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over every living thing that moves on the earth.” However, dominion does not mean change the way that God made something.

Jewish Perspective:
The Jewish Community is divided on this issue, much like Christians. GMOs go against Kosher because non kosher foods could be inserted into Kosher foods. Proper labeling should be put on food. Leviticus 19:19 “Do not mate different kinds of animals.
Do not plant your field with two kinds of seeds. Do not wear clothing woven of two different kinds of material.” There is not a formal decision, however the majority of the Jewish community is against them.

Hinduism Perspective:
Indian science has done genetic research in humans(population)and medicine. Their government puts regulations on everything. The big question is how to feed hungry and cure the sick, but respect the environment.
